RE: Just Thinking

You got a good truck. Go to dealer, make a deal with min down, financed from now until you retire. Walk out, start making that payment into a savings account, as additional savings. Keep driving the one you got, until close to retirement or somebody offers a bunch for the the old truck. Sell when you have a buyer that wants what you got, not when you need to get rid of a truck.

RE: surge vs electric

You can backup while flat towing. But only a few feet. Any further, you would need to lock or hold the steering wheel of the towd in the straight position, and even then it’s a sketchy operation. Your toad wheels are aligned to keep the vehicle tracking in a straight line while traveling forward. While backing, the wheels will want to turn left or right. I have been caught a handful of times needing to backup while flat towing. I find it easier to disconnect rather than the other method I mentioned above. Others have reported that backing places some extreme pressures on the tow bar. I’m sure others will chime in soon enough. I have wondered about starting the Toad, and have it supply power for a straight back up. Corners would be hard, have to follow path the rear of MH would go, but straight back to clear fuel island should not be a issue.

RE: surge vs electric

The main advantage to surge brakes is no need for brake wiring on TV. You say MH already has that, so a wash. Another advantage is when working, the braking is automatically proportional. To me, (I have had both on trailers at same time) a major disadvantage is it is harder to check for function before you pull out. And if the electric brakes are working when you park the trailer, nothing is likely to go wrong while it sets. The hydraulics can develop leaks, or the mechanical parts that work master cylinder can rust/corrode so no longer work smoothly. And if you care about dumping oil products around, repairing electric brakes, much less mess.

RE: Heavy-duty short bed ...

Not sure, but I think small trucks, if built too short run into issues with EPA or economy standards. Might need extra length of long bed for HD truck to meet standards.

RE: Needed a propane refill today

Well it looks like you finally got a tech doing his job. You can take it in, get re-certified, or you can swap it out at one of thousands of exchange places.

RE: Honda Pilot Towing

First welcome. When shopping for SUV, for TV, (or even trucks for that matter) be sure you pay attention to the *when properly equipped small print. Some Pilots might have rating of 5000, not sure all are. You should check VIN before you lay money down.

RE: Thanksgiving

This year, for the first time in decades we will go to another family member. We normally set up camp in state park. I cook the whole feast using Dutch ovens wood fire and charcoal. As the bird is cooking, I look around for anybody that looks to be alone. Invite them to join us. Over dozen ovens for just 2 leaves plenty to share with any stranger willing to meet with strangers.

RE: Make line on driveway for camper loading?

In my case you're not squeaking through at an angle. If you fit, you're straight. Even if I adjust the mirror to see the tires, I still don't see what having the line accomplishes. You need a line to sight against a line. A tire is just a point. Yes, if at angle that squeak will turn into a crash pretty quick. I park my trailer in the same spot every time I get home. I assume most people want to drop camper in same spot each time. If as you pull out, mark the path your left outside tire takes for say 10 feet past the point you clear the camper you have that 10 feet to get tire following that line as you go under camper. Just be sure camper is up high enough, and it should be a piece of chicken

RE: We just bought a fifth wheel! Several questions ...

Building without shore power? If have power on site I would just hook to that and don't worry about a battery until ready to go mobile with the RV.

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

The addition of the Exhaust Brake was a major factor for me upgrading from my 2005 Duramax to a 2011 Duramax. In approx 30K miles the 2005 need new brake pads, while the 2011 was still on the EOM pads when traded with 115K on the clock. Sounds like operator error to me if your replacing brakes every 30k miles. Anybody that has a lot of experience towing/hauling with a gas engine, gets a diesel without some form of add-on retarder will be surprised by how fast service brakes wear.

RE: What is this and where can I get one ?

Just a guess, but looks like something designed to reduce friction when parts slide together. You can buy things likely made out of similar material, to set furniture on, move around room. Shape with a saw. 1 of the tool boxes in garage, bottom bowing to point wheels would not caster. I replaced the wheels with pieces of a cheap cutting board. Don't move often, but when a nut rolls off bench behind it, I can.

RE: Valid air ride system tag axel pressure regulator plumbing

When I was adding a tag to truck I would tee off a line from tank, to open/close valve, with quick release, to adjustable regulator then to bags. Most of mine where air lift. I used a separate system, nearly same, except the regulator was mounted on frame. On trailer, I would tee in past leveling valve, then valve with quick release

RE: batteries in the winter

Turn off your battety disconnect and just leave the batteries in the MH. No nred for a charger as there is no discharge. If they won't hold a charge all winter disconnected they need replacing. I consider this to be incorrect information as they can loose up to 5% charge per month. How much damage is done, at what % of charge? And how long is winter? By my limited math skills that would mean still over 80% after 4 months.

RE: slight vibration on acceleration

Mine was on a car--a broken engine mount. That can be a issue that causes vibration, but mounts are unlikely to break while parked. With helper EZ to check. 1 hold brake while apply power, forward then reverse. If mount is broke, can see engine moves.

RE: slight vibration on acceleration

I have had issues with a truck that was parked for months, then put back in service. Just as soon as stop, hit driveline with greasegun. And a weak wire or plug often (Coil pack on modern engine?) is first noticed as miss under load.

RE: Running Dedicated Water Line For RV at Home?

I didn't look but freezing can be issue in most of the country. Now I'm not a plumber, but have installed a few frost-proof hydrants, and replaced some where people did not use them right. If I'm reading the OP right, this is a near-perfect case of attempted murder of the hydrant. The hydrant is designed to be set with the stem in a bed of gravel below frost line. The actual valve is down at bottom of stem. When you shut the water off, the valve stops flow from pipe and opens the upright so it can drain. A hose, or the add-on line is likely to keep the stem of hydrant full of water. Freeze swell and bust. You say you plan to bury line hydrant to camper, so much of the digging is in the plan. Why not do it right, tee off the line at base of hydrant, and install a 2nd hydrant near the camper? Then if you disconnect the hose when temps drop, all issues will be in camper.

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

All the comparisons are the 7.3 gasser vs. anything but a modern diesel with an exhaust brake. Compare a 7.3 gasser to the same year diesel that is the relevant equation. All the other comparisons are antiquated. Yes, this is the comparison I want to make. Yes, I out hear about how great exhaust brake works. Side by each, diesel with and without, easy to show that it works. And they can write ads, every body on the net swears need diesel because of exhaust brake. But can you show me where a modern 7 Liter diesel is compared to 7 Liter gas, like gears and loads, holding back on a hill? How about 5 liter? 3 liter? I highly suspect a lot of this, because manufactures have not shown such a test, is pushed to make people spend the extra for the diesel

RE: Inverter draw from battery for residential fridge

I would not assume that the 7 pin connection is providing charge or adequate charge. Get a voltmeter and check. Even if charging, some trucks have an undersized charge wire. This causes loss and therefore may not provide adequate charge. Wiring diagram/reading I have old absorption fridge, and have wired the trailer so the only power supplied to 12V side of fridge is from the 7 pin. And that is the only demand on charge circuit. We only camp with power, the fridge runs 120 at camp, 12V when we travel. But you are right, need to know getting adequate power. Could there be a phone app to watch voltage of trailer battery and fridge temp?

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

There isn’t a hill I’ve been on that I would be afraid to descend pulling a 16000 lb rv with the 7.3 gasser. Low gear and 6000 rpm is a lot of engine braking. You are a brave lad !!! Can't argue the fact of what a 7.3 gasser will ,or will not do , but I towed a fairly heavy fifth wheel many years with a 7.3 Powerstroke , no EB . Had a few white knuckle experiences coming of some of the hills in Utah, Idaho ,and Montana . Yes learned pretty quickly on how to come down some of those long grades . One example is the one coming from Ennis,MT to Virginia City , MT. It has the runaway ramp if needed . I have no doubt 7.3 gasser will hold back much more than 7.3 diesel with no engine brake. My question is will the Powerstroke, with exhaust brake added, slow any better than the 7.3 gasser.
